Forlì City of Art

The “Forlì City of Art” itinerary focuses on the city’s historic, artistic and architectural heritage. The vast Piazza Saffi has served as the old city centre’s beating heart for many centuries. Its porticoes are the place where its vibrant city life flows. One of the main monuments of Piazza Saffi is the Abbey of San Mercuriale, surmounted by an arresting belltower. The centre of the square is dominated by the statue of Aurelio Saffi.
Forlì is also the city of Caterina Sforza, whose memory is now immortalised by the Rocca di Ravaldino fortress. Classical art is exposed in the San Domenico Civic Museum, home to original masterpieces such as the superbe Ebe (“Hebe”) statue by Canova, one of the city’s icons, the sublime Annunciazione (“Annunciation”) by Marco Palmezzano and the Caravaggesque Fiasca con fiori (“Jug with flowers”).
The 20th century art is housed in the Palazzo Romagnoli Civic Museum. Here you will find the Verzocchi Collection, which includes over seventy paintings on the theme of work by great maestros such as Guttuso, Depero, De Chirico and Balla.
A few kilometers from Forlì you will find the district of San Varano, where Villa Saffi stands nestled in a green park. Now a museum, it was once the home of Aurelio, a famed politician and close friend of Mazzini.
