Former Church of San Giacomo

Former Church of San Giacomo

The church of San Giacomo Apostolo is part of the monastery complex founded by the Dominican Order in Forlì in the first half of the 13th century. It originally consisted of a small and simple church, with an adjoining convent on the southern side. The bell tower has always been in its current position, as confirmed by some Gothic architectural elements. Between the 13th and 15th centuries the original tripartite space was modified into a single large nave, representing the growing role of the Dominicans and functional to preaching.
In the Renaissance and Baroque periods the church underwent important works of embellishment, decoration and furnishing. The rich decoration of the Albicini chapel dates back to this period. The present state is mostly the result of the eighteenth-century intervention of neoclassical setting. In the Napoleonic age the church was preserved and opened for worship. With the Restoration, the Dominicans returned, but in 1867 the church was closed, stripped and transformed into a military manège. A phase of degradation began, culminating with the abandonment and the collapse (1978) of part of the roof and the southern facade. In the 90s, the Municipality started the process of gradual recovery that led to the complete restoration.
