Town Hall

Town Hall

The Town Hall, seat of the Municipality, was built in the year 1000 around the ancient tower and progressively expanded towards Campo dell'Abate. In 1412 it became the residence of the Ordelaffi family and it was subject to several changes and extensions over the centuries. The design of the current facade, a work of the engineers Gottardo Perseguiti and Giovanni Bertoni, dates back to when Cardinal Sanseverino was Papal Legate (1812-1826). Inside the building, the staircase leads to a narrow gallery where you can access the various rooms, all richly frescoed, located on the second floor. The Hall of the Municipal Council, or Hall of Fasti, designed by Bibiena (1761), is particularly interesting. The paintings are carefully inserted in an architectural context in trompe-l'oeil, representing columns, balconies, balustrades, windows and frames. Inside the palace there are preserved frescoes by Felice Giani (1809) and Francesco Menzocchi (1563). Behind the Town Hall, in the charming Piazzetta della Misura, rises the Civic Tower. It was built at an unspecified date and it was destroyed in 1944 by the retreating Germans, sweeping away and completely wrecking even the Town Theatre. It was rebuilt in 1977 and it is visitable only externally.
