Maternity Pavilion G.B. Morgagni Hospital

Simultaneously with a series of expansion works that affected the civic hospital of Forlì, in 1939 was built the Maternity Pavilion in memory of Mrs. Giulitta Morgagni Monti, mother of the great Sansepolcrist Officer Manlio Morgagni. It was designed by architect Aldo Zacchi, originally from Cesena. Consisting of three floors, for a total of 90 rooms and 45 "apartments" (rooms with bathroom for the tenants), the structure in reinforced concrete (for a total of "350 ql of iron") was distributed in three projecting covers on the front, connected by a long central hallway and a row of rooms behind.
The pavilion was equipped with the most modern facilities with elevators, freight elevators, containers for dirty laundry, food elevators, bathrooms with common bathtub and bidet for the patients in the dormitory, and private bathrooms for the tenants.
At the same time as Zacchi's work, in July 1939 the engineer Ferruccio Gavelli from Forlì was commissioned to design the nearby "Pavilion of the Sections of Surgery and Medicine", as a further extension of the hospital. Also in this case the language adopted was extremely simplified, since the use of reinforced concrete structures allowed the execution of a stereometric wall structure, a roof with a vaulted floor, moved by large windows in height. The two pavilions can be read in parallel, in the light of a sharing not only of the distributive and functional aspect, but also of an architectural language strongly homologated, in the compositional substance of the fronts, but still able, however, to distinguish itself, in relation to the two projects, in the use of materials and treatments. Zacchi's research remains that of an architect who, in spite of the simplification of the acquired rationalist language, aims at "acclimatizing... in a city of bricks" as it is Forlì.
