De Amicis Elementary School

De Amicis Elementary School

Built for an expected use of one thousand students, the building occupies a large block, with a wide garden that can be used as an outdoor gym. The large quadrangular structure has as its fourth side, parallel to the avenue and opposite the entrance side, a sort of large stone greenhouse for indoor recreation. The building is occupied by the current Edmondo De Amicis Elementary School.
The engineer Arnaldo Fuzzi developed a suggestive project, using local materials as well as functional planimetric systems and well distributed spaces. The warm yellow-pink hue of the fired bricks produced by the local Hoffmann furnaces matches the high cement basement. The decorations of the arches of the framed windows run along the entire perimeter of the building, characterized by the alternation of bricks placed in knife-edge and concrete bands, simulating medieval ornamental motifs. The double and triple lancet windows, positioned in the salient points of the entire building, are marked by small concrete columns concluded by small capitals with water leaves. The whole area of the school is delimited by a typical autarchic fence.
