Piazza Paulucci Palace

Piazza Paulucci Palace

The imposing building was started in 1673 by order of Monsignor Camillo dei Conti Piazza, Bishop of Dragonia. The construction, however, was never completed. The palace was brought as a dowry by Countess Giulia Piazza when she married Giacomo Paulucci. The Municipal Administration then bought the Palace in 1890, to use it as a public school. In 1932 it was decided to turn it into a city courthouse based on a project by architect L. Emilio Rosetti.
With the spread around the '30s of newly designed courthouses, the Head of State Benito Mussolini wanted to give his city a court to be built ex-novo, so they interrupted the renovation of Piazza-Paulucci Palace which was then used as the Government Palace. The hall of honor, however, was frescoed on two walls by the painter Francesco Olivucci from Forlì with figurative themes praising the Duce and the Emperor King. The sculptors B. Boifava and A. Casalini and the decorator painter C. Camporesi worked on the building as well. Bazzani redesigned and reinvented the back garden according to the scheme of the gardens of the sixteenth-century Roman villas.
