Sanctuary of Fornò

Sanctuary of Fornò

In the district of Fornò towards Forlimpopoli, there is a Sanctuary of great architectural, historical and artistic value, the Sanctuary of Fornò. Dating back to the mid-15th century, it was built at the request of Pietro Bianco, who found in the area of Fornò, then wooded, an image of Mary and he dedicated to her the name of the Sanctuary Santa Maria delle Grazie.
The Sanctuary is particularly original for its circular plan. You enter the church through a wide and sumptuous entrance opened by an arched and frescoed portal. As soon as you enter, you are overwhelmed by the vastness and solemnity of the place. Of absolute interest are the terracotta frieze that surrounds the Sanctuary internally, as well as the three marble portals and the terracotta tiles with the monogram of San Bernardino and Mary. Equally important, a relief depicting the Trinity and a marble statue "Madonna and Child", attributed to the sculptor Agostino di Duccio. To the right and to the left of the main entrance there are two artistic stacks for holy water in white Carrara marble. The whole building was radically restored between 1853 and 1857.
