Church of Santa Lucia

Church of Santa Lucia

At the end of Via Pellegrino Laziosi you arrive in Corso della Repubblica, just in front of the Church of Santa Lucia, whose construction was started in 1614 by the monks of the Order of San Francesco di Paola. The present façade was rebuilt in 1829 on a design by Giuseppe Pani. Inside, on the high altar, there is the urn that held the remains of San Rufillo, the first bishop of Forlimpopoli, from 1362 to 1964.
In honor of the Saint, every December 13th, the main square of the city (Piazza Saffi) and Corso della Repubblica hold a market, where you can find crunchies, nougat, sweets, toys and delicacies of all kinds. This is the day in which beautiful girls are celebrated. Legend has it that the young Lucia, to refuse the offers of a nobleman, had her eyes plucked out and sent them as a gift as a sign of integrity and refusal. For this reason the Saint is considered the protector of sight.
